New York Externship Program
The New York Externship Program allows students to earn credit while gaining legal experience that will stand out on their resumes. Through hands-on lawyering working with attorneys in real practice settings, students improve their research, writing, and legal analysis skills while learning how to identify and adapt to the culture and expectations of a legal setting. The local program allows students to complete an externship alongside their regular coursework.
Externships are available to second- and third-year students in good academic standing. Interested students participate in application and interview processes with established placements that take place each spring. Students may apply for a one-semester or full academic year externship and/or a summer externship.
Where can you work?
The New York Externship Program participates with a variety of placements across the Central New York area, spanning from Rochester to Binghamton. Our placements include:
- Public Interest
- University Offices
- General Counsel
Externship students will enroll in the accompanied seminar which examines the complex operations of the legal profession and relevant new lawyering topics. Students will work together, present in class, hear from guest panels, network with the local legal community and alumni, and reflect on the transition from classroom to practice settings.
Students are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from placements during the course of their externship.
