New York City Externship

Gain Practical Legal Experience and Network in the Big Apple.

The College of Law has introduced its New York City Externship Program, providing its law students with an opportunity to gain practical legal experience and expand their professional network in New York City.

Modeled after the successful D.C. Externship Program, the New York City Externship Program will be offered in the Fall, Summer and Spring to qualified second- and third-year students. The Program will provide legal placements across the spectrum of career paths, from traditional law firms to government agencies to the judiciary, and more. Students will work full time, putting what they learn in the classroom into practice. Students will also participate in a bi-weekly seminar held by a Distinguished Guest Lecturer from the New York City legal community and will write a short research paper.

The New York City Externship Program will host its first group of students in January 2018.

Where can you work in New York City?

There are any number of placement opportunities in New York City. Our placements will include:

  • Law Firms
  • Corporate Counsel Offices
  • Compliance Groups
  • Judiciary
  • Government
  • Non-Profits

The New York City Lawyer Seminar will examine relevant topics to the legal profession as it operates in a complex, international city. Students will hear from Distinguished Guest Lecturers from all aspects of the law profession twice a month on pressing legal issues and have the opportunity to interact on an informal basis. Students will be expected to keep a journal to reflect on these experiences.

Research Paper

Students will complete a 15-page paper on an approved topic within their subject matter interest.

Housing and Travel

Students are responsible for securing their own transportation and housing in the New York City area.

One housing resource to explore is EHS.

Students will have the opportunity to network - formally in monthly networking receptions and informally - with New York City area alumni and other practitioners.
