Central New York Externship Program

The CNY Externship Program

The CNY Externship Program allows students to earn credit while gaining legal experience that will stand out on their resumes. Students gain hands-on lawyering experience while working with and as lawyers in real office settings. Through externships, students improve their research, writing, and legal analysis skills, while learning how to identify and adapt to the culture and practice of a law office.

The CNY Externship Program is available to second and third year students who are in good academic standing. Interested students participate in an application and interview process with pre-established placement sites during the spring semester. The local externship program offers students two options: a full academic year externship and/or a summer externship. Associated coursework includes the Externship Placement, providing credit for the externship experience, as well as the Externship Seminar, which addresses lawyering as a profession and allows students to reflect on their individual externship experience.

Placements cover a wide range of legal fields and include government offices, public interest, judicial placements, university offices, and general counsel.

The Externship Application & Recruitment process occurs every spring semester for the following summer and academic year.
