Maintaining balance during law school

Maintaining balance in law school is not only critical to academic success, but also to staying healthy and sane. “Free time” is hard to come by with many students having less than 3 hours a day to themselves after classes, reading/preparation, sleeping, and eating. Apportioning your time effectively between your academic obligations and personal life is a critical factor in helping reduce stress. Law school is an inherently stressful environment and it’s a type of stress you’ve likely never encountered before. Using your spare time to recharge, unwind, relax, and get your mind off of your studies temporarily is an important and necessary element to reaching success. 

Some choose to use that time to work out. Others choose to watch their favorite TV show, a movie, or a sports game. Others may get involved with the many extracurricular activities the College of Law has to offer. However you decide to allocate that time, it is vital that you make proper use of it and do not waste it. Once you find a system that works for you and it becomes part of your routine, then you’ll truly understand how important maintaining balance is. We all have limits – so spending all of your time studying may actually hinder your progress since you’ll likely burn out quite quickly. 

Your first plan may not work for you. Your second plan may not work either. Remain open to change and adapt as you go along. What’s worked for you in the past may not be an effective strategy in law school. Don’t be afraid to seek help from friends, colleagues, and the Office of Student Life as you progress. A key part of the maturation process law school puts you through is learning how to better yourself through others. The countless hours and hard work you put in over this three-year span will be worth it and keeping proper balance will go a long way in helping you achieve your goals.
