Eligibility CriteriaTo be eligible, the applicant must (i) be either a first, second or third year law student in good standing in an ABA accredited law school, or a recent law graduate from an ABA accredited law school still studying for the Bar Exam. (ii) have secured an internship or job for Summer 2021 (which can extend beyond the Summer) and/or the Fall of 2021 with a public interest organization engaged in legal or policy work with a direct impact on LGBTQ individuals. Applicants will be evaluated on the strength of their complete application and supporting materials, academic record, and demonstrated commitment to improve the legal and social standing of the LGBTQ community, including LGBTQ individuals. The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce the twenty-seventh annual Brown Award. The Award is in recognition of Excellence in Legal Writing in American Law Schools. Any law student currently enrolled in an accredited law school in the United States seeking a J.D. or LL.B degree is eligible to submit a paper for the Award.In order to be considered, two copies of a current legal writing must be submitted to the Foundation c/o Kenneth G. Engerrand, Brown Sims, P.C., Tenth Floor, 1177 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-9007. The article must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the paper. Only one paper may be submitted on behalf of any student, and only one paper may be sponsored by any faculty member or legal professional. The submission must contain a separate sheet containing the title of the paper; the name, physical address, telephone number, and email address of the student; and the name, title, physical address, and email address of the student’s sponsor. There is no page limitation or restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject. Papers that have been submitted to a law review for publication are eligible, but the submission must be of the paper in its form before it was edited by anyone other than the author. The Foundation will appoint a final judging panel consisting of a law school dean, a federal judge, and a law school professor. The Foundation will not return any material submitted to the Foundation. Who is Eligible?Residents of Erie County, Pennsylvania who will be entering their FIRST year at an ABA-accredited law school are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Authors must have completed or be currently taking coursework in employment or labor law, and must be enrolled in an accredited law school during the Spring 2021 semester. Only the first two submissions per law school will be accepted as entries for consideration. Format Entries must be suitable for publication in a law review. Citations must conform to current Bluebook style. Papers must not exceed 35 pages in length when printed on 8½ x 11 inch paper, including footnotes. BackgroundThe Sharon and Ivan Leadership (SAIL) Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to an individual who will be a 2L student starting in the 2021 Fall Semester (current 1L students should apply) who has outstanding professional promise and leadership potential. Applicants will be evaluated for (a) academic excellence in their undergraduate school years and first year of law school, (b) leadership experience, (c) volunteerism or service in the public interest, (d) knowledge of social and cultural issues of any one or more AAPI communities or commitment to making a significant impact on issues affecting one or more AAPI communities, or both, and (e) commitment to “pay it forward.” The NAPABA Law Foundation will award from the SAIL Scholarship Fund at least one $5,000 scholarship each year, half of which would be distributed to the recipient in his or her second year of law school and the remainder of which would be distributed to the recipient in his or her third year of law school. The SAIL Scholarship is made possible due to the generosity of Sharon and Ivan Fong.
