David Cay Johnston, Distinguished Visiting Lecturer, has written about “binary economics”, an economic concept taught by Professor of Law Robert Ashford. Binary economics encourages workers to make ongoing capital investments in their employers, enabling more employees to have a stake in ownership and profitability, for increased individual wealth at retirement.

In his article "Every Man a Capitalist", Johnston notes, “Ashford points to other benefits from widespread acquisition of capital with the earnings of capital. For example, reliance on welfare would decline, a deeper tax base would justify lower tax rates, while growing purchasing power, and consumer confidence, would mean more sales by businesses.”
