Professor Helfman Secures Grant to Establish Reading Group on Key Historical Legal Documents
With the support of a generous grant from the Institute for Humane Studies and the John Templeton Foundation, Professor Helfman is guiding a reading group this fall called Freedom and the Framers.
Twenty 2Ls and 3Ls have volunteered to meet weekly over lunch to discuss key texts in the Anglo-American legal tradition ranging from Magna Carta to the Declaration of Independence, the Petition of Right to the South Carolina Slave Codes. The reading group encourages students to examine the relationship between law and liberty and enables them to appreciate the deep historical roots of the U.S. Constitution. Each student receives a library of books on U.S. constitutional law, history, and political theory.
