Kris Kiefer L'05

Kristoffer Kiefer graduated from the University of Rochester in 2002 and earned his Juris Doctor in 2005 from Syracuse University College of Law. While at the College of Law, Mr. Kiefer was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Law and Commerce, a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, a member of the Jessup Moot Court Team, a Student Senator, and a Structured Study Group leader. He also received a certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism Studies from Syracuse’s Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, and he spent an academic year clerking for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

Mr. Kiefer currently serves as General Counsel for U.S. Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona. In that role he oversees Senator Flake’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee portfolio, including work on energy, water, land use, and environmental regulations. Mr. Kiefer also provides advice on the legal implications of certain legislation being considered by the Senate. Specific to the 113th Congress, he has served as lead advisor to Senator Flake on a bipartisan response to the growing threat of wildfires in the western United States. He has also worked closely with Senator Flake and the Department of the Interior to identify a responsible approach to water-resource issues in Arizona and throughout the Colorado River basin.

Having started his legal career at Snell & Wilmer LLP in Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked in the firm’s real estate and environmental practice group, Mr. Kiefer’s practice included work on the National Environmental Policy Act or NEPA, water rights, civil rights, and state procurement law. He also previously served as Legislative Counsel for former U.S. Senator and Minority Whip Jon Kyl, where he provided strategic policy advice on a broad portfolio of issues, including federal water rights, cybersecurity, Native American affairs, energy, agriculture, and related appropriations bills.

Mr. Kiefer resides in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife, Sarah and their two daughters, Luella and Violet.
