Richard E. Mitchell L'95

Richard E. Mitchell obtained a Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from Cornell University, his Master of Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, and his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1995.  As a law student, he was a teaching assistant for first-year legal writing and oral advocacy, an active participant in the Public Interest Law Clinic, and successfully completed the International Legal Studies Certificate Program.

Mr. Mitchell is now a real estate transactions partner in the Seattle-based law office of Graham & Dunn, P.C., a fifty person firm that has served northwest businesses for over a century.  Prior to joining Graham & Dunn, he practiced as both a trial and business transactions attorney in real estate, design and construction related matters in two national law firms, and served as General Counsel to Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire.

Mr. Mitchell’s dedication to public service, which was first noticed while he was a student at Cornell, where he received the University’s Leadership Award, has been a constant in his career.  He has successfully represented plaintiffs in civil rights cases involving excessive use of force, and child offenders sentenced to life without parole.   In 2003, he was recognized as a National Finalist for his commitment to public service in the prestigious White House Fellowship program.  Then in 2009, following his four years of service to Governor Gregoire’s administration, the Washington State Bar Association awarded him its Professionalism Award in recognition of his commitment to professionalism and philanthropic activities throughout Washington State.

While maintaining his busy practice focusing on the real estate, design and construction needs of both private and public entities, he currently serves as a Seattle University Regent, and an adjunct faculty member at its law school, the President of the King County Bar Association, a Trustee on the Legal Foundation of Washington – a foundation that distributes approximately $10 million in grants every year to legal service providers for the poor and needy.  In addition, he is a Commissioner on the King County Housing Authority – a five person Commission responsible for $183 million in assets and over 300 full time employees, and a member of the University of Hawaii School of Architecture’s Advisory Council Board.

Mr. Mitchell, his wife and three children reside on Mercer Island, Washington.  He and his family enjoy kayaking, fly fishing, hiking and camping.
