Ruchi Thaker

RUCHI THAKER is a 2002 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law.  As a student, Ms. Thaker served on the Executive Board of the Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce, and was also involved with both the American Bar Association publication The Labor Lawyer, and The Digest: The Journal of the National Italian American Bar Association.  She also participated in several appellate moot court competitions, including the Jessup Moot Court Competition (semi-finalist), the Mackenzie Lewis Appellate Advocacy Competition (finalist), and the Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition, where in 2000 she was awarded the Northeast Regional Championship.  Ms. Thaker also offered her time and volunteered at a local immigration attorney's office in Syracuse.  During her third year of law school, she worked as a research assistant on the Lockerbie Trial-Families Project with the late Professor Donna Arzt, which worked to offer moral and legal support to the families of the victims of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. This work was done through a grant to Syracuse University College of Law from the United States Department of Justice.

Since her graduation from the College of Law, Ms. Thaker has specialized in the area of U.S. immigration law.  Immediately after law school, she joined the Manhattan immigration law firm of Bretz & Coven, LLP, where she specialized in criminal deportation defense, federal court litigation, and family-based immigration law.  In January of 2007, Ms. Thaker began her own law firm with a partner, and today she is the managing partner at Thaker Berowitz LLP in New York City.

In her capacity as an immigration lawyer, Ms. Thaker has helped hundreds of clients fulfill their dreams of becoming green card holders or citizens of the United States, or to simply avoid deportation.  She has successfully litigated numerous groundbreaking immigration cases in federal courts that have affected not only the lives of her clients, but the lives of hundreds of other immigrants who are able to benefit from the successful litigation. Some of her victories include Ashley v. Ridge, Zmijewska v. Gonzales, and Matter of Zmijewska.

In addition to running her own law firm, Ms. Thaker regularly judges trial and appellate moot court competitions in the New York City area, and has been a guest lecturer on immigration law at Hunter College in New York City.  She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the New York County Lawyers Association.
