William Tansey L'03

William Tansey graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and became a Navy Surface Warfare Officer. Following his three tours of duty, Mr. Tansey earned his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 2003. While at the College of Law, Mr. Tansey was a member of the National Trial Team and the Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce.

Upon graduation from the College of Law, Mr. Tansey returned to the U.S. Navy as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG). He was first stationed in Norfolk, Virginia to provide legal assistance to sailors and their families. In that role, he drafted wills, marital separation agreements, and mediated landlord-tenant disputes. Mr. Tansey then served as a military defense attorney defending sailors at Special and General Courts Martials.

Next, Mr. Tansey served as a Staff Judge Advocate for Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic. In this role, Mr. Tansey twice deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism, one of which was to the Iraqi Central Criminal Court in Baghdad, Iraq where he prosecuted insurgents captured by American Forces. Mr. Tansey then rotated to Mayport, Florida to be the Officer-in-Charge of the Military Prosecution Office. He prosecuted sailors at General Courts Martial and advised local Commanding Officers based in Mayport Naval Station.

Immediately following his time in the Navy, Mr. Tansey practiced maritime law in the New York City office of Blank Rome, LLP.

Mr. Tansey currently works as a public defense attorney in Essex County, New York, home of the Adirondack High Peaks. He defends indigent and low income individuals throughout Essex County in over twenty town courts and the County Criminal Court.

Mr. Tansey and his wife Stephani have two children, Sarah and William.
