James T. Dehn L'98

Jame T. DehnJAMES T. DEHN graduated from George Mason University in 1995 and earned his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1998.  Concurrently, he earned his Master of Arts in International Relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.  While at Syracuse, he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, Form & Accuracy Editor of the Syracuse Journal of International Law & Commerce, a mediator with the Syracuse Mediation Center, a graduate research assistant for Professor Rabin, and an extern for the United States Attorney’s Office, N.D.N.Y.  

Mr. Dehn is currently appellate counsel for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  He practices immigration law, with a particular emphasis on appellate practice, as well as national security and human rights violation cases.  He is also a recipient of the ICE Assistant Secretary’s 2007 Protecting the Homeland Award for his work on terrorism removal cases.  Additionally, Mr. Dehn is a veteran of the U.S. Army (Reserves) Judge Advocate General’s Corps.  Captain Dehn practiced military justice first as a trial defense counsel and later as Government Appellate Counsel.  As a Judge Advocate, Captain Dehn argued numerous appeals of courts-martial convictions before the Army Court of Criminal Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.  Recent published cases argued by Mr. Dehn include United States v. Maynulet, 68 M.J. 374 (C.A.A.F. 2010) and Matter of Castillo-Padilla, 25 I&N Dec. 257 (BIA 2010).

Mr. Dehn also previously worked as appellate counsel for the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and as a private practitioner in labor and employment law, specializing in management defense, at Whelan, DeMaio & Kiszkiel, P.A., in Miami, Florida.  He is a member of the Maryland Bar and Florida Bar (inactive).

Mr. Dehn is married to fellow College of Law alumnus Negin Nazemi Dehn, L’98, who is an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice.   Mr. and Mrs. Dehn currently live in Virginia and remain busy raising three future Syracuse students: John (6), Chloe (4), and Teddy (3).
