Train with London’s Leading Legal Practitioners

Syracuse University College of Law proudly offers one of the nation’s longest-running externship programs with a wide variety of legal placements based in London. Students will work as externs over a six-, seven- or eight-week experience, gaining international exposure to lawyering in a global context while working alongside solicitors and barristers who provide personalized mentoring. For over 40 years[PDF], the College of Law has offered our students a comprehensive introduction to London’s rich legal world, immersing ourselves in U.K. law, and living it through a panoply of internships in this unique summer program.

The LondonEx Experience
Rigorous coursework and hands-on learning experiences cultivate a student’s ability to pursue a career working in a global context with lawyers from throughout the world. Our Summer 2021 remote placements include the AIRE Centre, Withers LLP, others in London and the United Kingdom. Individuals who enroll in LondonEx are mentored by practitioners and supervised by American faculty who guide students in learning from their experiences.
Your transcript will reflect that you have enrolled in Law 910: LondonEx - Clinic Internships. Students are graded on a pass/fail basis unless their school requires an assigned grade.
Through a series of lectures and discussions from our London summer faculty and lecturers, students receive intensive exposure in fundamental tenets of English law. The program emphasizes English legal institutions, the legal profession, court structure, and procedure in both civil and criminal cases, as well as selected areas of substantive law. Interns participate in an intensive orientation on the British legal system. Weekly seminars, led by faculty and practitioners, augment the internship.
Program requirements include mandatory orientation and class attendance, completion of seminar readings, regular reflective writings, competent completion of internship responsibilities, and a final presentation. All events and meetings will be held remotely during the Summer 2021 program.
It is the student's responsibility to confirm with their home school/college that this course and placement experience may be used to satisfy their degree requirements.
Applications received before March 1 are given preferred consideration and reviewed on a rolling basis based on program availability.

"I grew so much thanks to the LondonEx Program. The international hands-on work experience helped me develop skills such as writing and research that I will continue to use throughout my career. LondonEx also allowed me to identify the areas of law I would like to practice in the future. I absolutely loved my placement. All the passionate individuals in the team created a positive work environment and became connections that will last me a lifetime. At the end of the summer, I did not want to leave! Living abroad provided opportunities that allowed me to get to know myself better and strengthen my self-confidence. It truly is an unforgettable adventure!"—2L Frances Rivera Reyes, 2019 LondonEx extern at MSCI
